There are several methods of making creatine commercially. AlzChem AG uses a process in which sarcosinate and cyanamide are used as raw materials. This production method is considered the best and safest, and AlzChem AG thus minimizes the risk that creatine produced in this way contains two undesirable by-products: dicyandiamide (DCD) and dihydrotriazine (DHT). Pure creatine should not contain more than a few ppm (millionths) of DCD and no detectable traces of DHT, as the latter is potentially hazardous to health. Creapure is pure creatine.
Another common manufacturing process used by competitors uses sarcosine and S-methylthiourea as starting materials. The creatine so produced can contain impurities such as methanethiol (methyl mercaptan), thiourea, and dimethyl sulfate, all of which are toxic.

Creatinine can be created from creatine during the manufacturing process or storage. A share of over one percent was found in some creatine samples bought blindly from the competition. Creatinine is not harmful to health, but has no effect either and indicates careless processing.
