Citrulline

Citrulline is a non-proteinogenic amino acid, i.e. it is not used to build proteins. Nevertheless, it plays an important role in the organism. Citrulline is part of the urea cycle in the liver and kidneys. The urea cycle is an important main component of protein metabolism. This is where construction and dismantling processes take place. Proteins, for example, are broken down, with acidic metabolic breakdown products such as ammonia being produced. This acidic ammonia must be disposed of from the body so that the energy and protein metabolism can continue to run smoothly, as the enzymes that build proteins and energy-rich substances such as creatine phosphate and adenosine triphosphate in the body are very sensitive to acids.
When protein is broken down from food and during physical exertion such as intensive training, ammonia is also produced through the breakdown of muscle protein. This can lead to premature fatigue. Citrulline helps the body break down these by-products.
While the body reaches its limits faster without citrulline, taking citrulline about 30 minutes before training can help that 2-3 more repetitions are possible in a set. More repetitions mean more stimulation for the muscle and therefore more incentive to grow.
