And once again an Evogen athlete was crowned Mr Olympia. Congratulations to the winner Derek Lunsford.
Derek Lunsford cemented his place in bodybuilding history by becoming the first athlete to win the Olympic title in multiple weight classes. In 2021 he secured his 212th Olympic title, and in 2023 he captured the coveted Sandow Trophy. The amazing muscle mass and definition he gained in just two years to achieve this success is truly remarkable.
While last year Lunsford had to settle for second place behind reigning Mr. Olympia champion Hadi Choopan, this year Lunsford returned to the stage with determination and secured the Sandow Trophy, which upset Choopan.
Hadi Choopan, the then champion, and Samson Dauda, the winner of the Arnold Classic 2023, were the two other standout bodybuilders competing for the Mr. Olympia title after the preliminary round on the first day of the event. Nevertheless, Lunsford clearly stood out during the final as he continued to improve from the previous day and presented an extremely muscular body shape.
The audience went into a frenzy when Lunsford turned and showed his rear view during the finale. Lunsford is now the 18th bodybuilder to win the Mr. Olympia title in the competition's 59-year history. In addition to $400,000 in prize money, the coveted Sandow Trophy and the Olympic gold medal, Lunsford also won the People's Choice Award at the Olympia 2023.
The Mr. Olympia competition is the highlight of the annual Joe Weider's Olympia Fitness & Performance Weekend. When host Bob Cicherillo declared Derek Lunsford the "NEW Mr. Olympia Champion," the crowd went wild.
